The challenge

A British prince was marrying an American tv star and the royal town of Windsor was set to be overcome with tens of thousands of enthusiastic and well-wishing fans and celebrity spotters.

Expectations were high and the demand on public transport to get to and from Windsor was predicted to be huge.

First Travel Solutions (FTS) are experts in bespoke transport operations for large scale events and were commissioned by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to provide bus shuttle to connect flag wavers with rail services in and out of Slough.

The biggest challenges the team faced were around planning for unknown numbers and the impact of road closures on bus timings.

The solution

This project was all about multi agency co-ordination and FTS’ ability to plan and deliver a crowd busting operation in conjunction with local councils, Great Western Railway (GWR) and police and security services.

The shuttle service ran between 0630 and 1900 and utilised a dozen or so double decker vehicles from First Group’s depots at Slough and Reading.

Staff were deployed at Slough rail, bus stations and at the drop off point in the centre of Windsor to manage queuing and bus loading.

Big screens were installed at the rail and bus stations so those waiting for buses could keep up to date and involved in the celebrations before their journey.

The result

Everyone got to the wedding on time! Our 20 strong team moved over six thousand spectators on nearly 100 bus journeys. We also provided multiple buses to get event staff to and from Windsor Castle.&nbsp;

Due to the close-knit working of the multi-agency transport group we knew the challenges and prepared resilient and robust plans and timetables. All the buses ran to time and connected spectators with train services either into or out of Slough. Queuing time was very minimal at each location and the day went without a hitch.

FTS were praised for their efforts by Slough Council, the Royal Borough and GWR.

It’s the biggest wedding we have ever provided transport for.

<h2>The Challenge</h2>

First Travel Solutions (FTS) received a phone call in November 2016 from the Managing Director of First South West. They had an urgent requirement for on the ground staff to support them with a coach contract they were operating on behalf of EDF Energy.

The contract meant First South West providing coach travel to EDF staff from various park and ride sites to and from Hinkley Point.

First South West contacted FTS to seek support with providing a visible customer service presence to the EDF staff using the coach service on a daily basis.

The initial request was received from First South West on Tuesday 29th November asking for FTS staff to be in place and supporting the contract by Thursday 1st December 2016.

The challenge for FTS was to recruit and secure staff who had the correct experience and skills to support this contract at short notice.

<h2>The Solution</h2>

FTS staff set about establishing the availability of staff who could work away from home Monday to Friday each week, every other weekend, for potentially a long-term operation.

The staff recruited had to be experienced in specific skills. This included being able to support coach/bus manoeuvres, have experience of bus operations and of course excellent customer service skills were essential.

Once staff were recruited FTS then contacted their internal dedicated team who allocate accommodation all over the UK, and asked them to assist provide the best, most suitable accommodation as close to the various park and ride sites as possible for these staff.

<h2>The Result</h2>

The Hinkley Point contract is running smoothly and efficiently with the help and organisation of FTS staff on the ground at the various park and ride sites and at Hinkley Point.

FTS staff are helping with planning coach and bus timetables on a daily basis as well as assisting the customers every day to get to and from their destination.

The contract has been extended until the end of May 2017 and EDF Energy has praised FTS and their staff for their supportive role in delivering this contract.
